At Home With Julie Hardin | V20.
After being approached for years growing up (my parents were strict and modeling was a hard "no") I was formally approached by the head of Karen Models in Paris on my 21st birthday. I told him I had to finish college first. I was in Paris studying abroad for the year. He told me to contact him after I graduated, and true to his word, over a year later he signed me with his agency and flew me to Paris. I worked in Paris for one year and upon returning to Los Angeles was represented by Nina Blanchard. She introduced me (in person) to Eileen Ford who loved my look and offered to fly me to New York and put me up in one of her model apartments. I declined her offer for two reasons: (1) I missed my boyfriend and family and wanted to stay in LA; (2) I felt too old!
Ironically, I have come back to modeling in later life. After years of being approached between then and now I decided why not? The universe is telling me something. As I type this, I feel strongly that women 50 and older aren't represented enough in today's fashion and beauty advertisements. I'm here to help change that!
(I don't regret my decision not to accept Eileen Ford's offer. I have a beautiful family and if I hadn't made my choice then perhaps things would be different on that front.)
The ability to wholeheartedly embrace my authentic self. Realizing that I have the will and ability to go after unmade versions of myself. I believe the delta between dreaming and becoming is closer than it appears. It's a matter of going to that well deep inside of you and finding what's there. See it through. Reach for the stars and never stop striving. At any time, we as women can grow, evolve and BECOME.
WHEN DID YOU GO GREY?
I have been grey since I was 23 but took the plunge and detoxed from hair coloring in 2016. I learned a lot. I realized that in a city like Los Angeles it's really an act of bravery. Almost a rebellion against the chains that bind women to certain standards of how they think they should look. Looking good is about how you FEEL. I receive some kind of positive feedback about my hair every day. People feel compelled it seems to say something. I have come to realize that I inspire women to reveal their silvery moon hair and thus their true selves. That is truly gratifying.
WHAT'S THE BEST BEAUTY SECRET YOU KNOW?
Wash your face and moisturize every night before you go to sleep. No matter what. Even if it's 3 am!
WHO IS YOUR FASHION ICON AND WHY?
CHER! Cher in the 70's! The bell bottoms. The platform sandals. The crocheted sweaters and tube tops. Turquoise jewelry and lip gloss. Paisley pantsuits and feather earrings. Glossy ironed hair. The ultimate glamorous icon of the late 60's and early 70's. There was no one like her. A true original.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO STAY ACTIVE?
Run, hike, yoga (I am an instructor), walk my dog. Anything to get outdoors and be under trees and clouds. Yes, I love clouds.
Expanding my current modeling career. Showing women of all ages that silver and 50's can be beautiful. And traveling (hopefully).
WHAT DOES "PERFECTLY UNDONE" MEAN TO YOU?
Comfortable in your own skin and by extension in the clothes you are wearing. Having a fashion sense yet being true to your core self. For me that's never too pressed, but also not wrinkled. Living in clothes that let you move and enhance who you are and what you feel. Soft, relaxed, cozy yet contemporary fashion. I guess my mantra would be simplicity in all things is the most elegant.
