V3. MEET OUR CREATIVE DIRECTOR
Nation LTD Creative Director and Designer Jessica Moss shares her perfectly undone approach to the modern wardrobe.
WHAT DREW YOU TO DESIGN?
When I was a teenager, there would be pieces that I wanted but couldn’t find in stores so I would just make them. I taught myself to sew on my Grandma’s old sewing machine. Then I started noticing that the things I made would be everywhere a year later...I've just kind of always been on this natural designer's calendar. After several years working as a costume designer and stylist, it was a natural progression for me.
WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
I love the way clothes can make a person feel. A person can put something on and make it their own. My design becomes an expression of them and I love that.
WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR INSPIRATION?
I’m always trying to figure out what I need to make my own life more stylish. It may sound cliché, but I think about what I'm missing in my wardrobe. Creatively, I use my travels for inspiration. I always find inspiration in the feeling of a foreign place. I guess I have a thing for tiles - the colors just provide endless amounts of inspiration for me. Lately I have been craving color - lots of unexpected COLOR. I can't get enough of it. (Bubblegum is my current obsession - see the collection HERE)
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
My favorite way to dress is what I’d call uniform dressing. It's where you kind of have a set uniform and every day you just plug in the different components to create a similar look. For me, it’s the easiest way to not have to think about it every morning and still look put together.
WHAT'S YOUR UNIFORM?
A pair of high waisted jeans, vintage or Levi's. A great tee (tucked in) with a vintage belt. Add a blazer and a pair of heels and I’m good to go.
WHAT DOES EVERY WOMAN NEED IN HER WARDROBE?
Versatile pieces that can be dressed up or dressed down are the key. I don't like clothes that are only for one thing because it's limiting and who has time for that? Every woman needs a slip dress. You can wear a tee over it with some boots to go to work to be casual, or you can wear it solo if you're going to an event or dinner. It's just so simple and perfectly undone. Build your wardrobe around pieces like that.
WHAT DOES "PERFECTLY UNDONE" MEAN?
Effortlessness. It’s that “I threw on these things and I didn't think about it too much, but they happen to look perfect together” kind of vibe. It's unfussed, it's uncoiffed, but at the same time naturally beautiful and totally cool. It’s what we go for here.
ANY STYLE ICONS?
Lauren Hutton is my fashion spirit animal. She’s just that perfect blend of sexy and tomboy plus I'm a sucker for a gapped tooth. She’s the definition of chic at every age.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?
Spend time at home with my husband and my dogs - we host a lot of dinner parties. My husband is a fantastic cook, and I do pottery, so his food on my dishes make for a pretty great evening. Obviously, though I love to travel. Right now I'm dreaming of going back to Sicily. We were there in 2019 and it was pure magic. There is something so beautiful about the pace of life there, it makes me rethink how we do things here.
HOW DOES NATION LTD'S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY TO TRANSLATE TO THE REST OF YOUR LIFE?
I try to make as many eco-conscious choices in my life as I can. I recently decided to eliminate all plastic from our kitchen. Instead of plastic wrap I use a mix of silicone lids and beeswax coated sheets. I swapped ziplock bags for silicone baggies from Stasher and replaced all my tupperware with glass. I believe that if you are conscious and make little choices every day, it adds up to something that matters.
The next thing that I have to tackle is my bathroom…(which is a bigger conversation)
